WINNIPEG -- The Washington Capitals did a lot wrong but still came out ahead with a 5-4 shootout win over the Winnipeg Jets. Martin Erat scored the winner in the sixth round of the shootout on Tuesday, despite Washington being outshot 47-32 and giving up many breakaways to the hard-charging Jets. "We made every mistake you can make basically in the course of the game," said Capitals head coach Adam Oates. "Its the first time this year where weve come to this building or a Canadian rink and the boys are so much faster." He said theyll find things even faster in Edmonton, where the Capitals (4-5-0) play Thursday. "Its the fastest rink in the league and youve got to be prepared for that. Its a mental adjustment." Oates gave credit to goaltender Braden Holtby for stopping 43 of the 47 shots he faced in three regulation periods and five minutes of overtime. The Capitals managed only 32 on Winnipeg netminder Ondrej Pavelec, not even one in overtime. "Holt made some huge saves," said Oates. Alex Ovechkin had two goals and an assist for Washington, while Mikhail Grabovski and Troy Brouwer also scored. "You notice it, its hard not to," Holtby said of the barrage he faced, which included more breakaways than he could count. "We got a win on the start of our road trip here and weve nowhere to go but improve for the rest of it." Bryan Little struck twice for Winnipeg (4-5-1), while Grant Clitsome and Blake Wheeler also scored as the Jets wrapped up a six-game homestand, their longest of the season. Andrew Ladd had three assists and coach Claude Noel was pleased at the way his captains intensity helped lead the team. "He played with a lot of will tonight, through physical play and winning battles," said Noel. "Thats the Andrew Ladd that really helps us win." Besides the point from the shootout loss, Noel was pleased with the Jets efforts, including coming back twice from deficits and getting more offence from his juggled forward lines. "We wanted to play physical. I thought that we did. We got good production from our leaders. They stepped up and played and thats a good thing, so I think we go from there and build on that." Oates said the Capitals will be talking about what they need to do as they move forward. Although they were outhustled in the first, Grabovski opened scoring in the second period with his fourth goal of the season when he swept in and put a loose puck behind Pavelec at 3:11. Little brought the Jets even with his first goal when he and Ladd broke away shorthanded at 7:21. It was the Jets second breakaway of the penalty with Evander Kane failing to get past Holtby one-on-one. "We just didnt finish," said Kane of the many scoring chances that didnt end up in the net. "Its a good sign to get those breaks and get those opportunities but it was a tough game (to lose) because we did a lot of good things." Just just over a minute after Littles goal, Byfuglien fed Clitsome, who slapped in his first goal of the season in from the point to give the Jets the 2-1 lead. Washington caught a break when Ovechkin broke away at 15:51 to beat Pavelec one-on-one to even it at 2-2. Then Ovechkin was fed off the faceoff beside the Winnipeg net and slipped one through the crowd at 18:02 to give the Capitals the lead, although it didnt last long. Wheeler tipped in a shot from Kane with less than a minute left in the period to even it up again. Brouwer finally connected with a power-play goal just under five minutes into the third period. The Jets had successfully shut down the best power play in the NHL until then. But Little evened it up again with a wrist shot from the slot at 7:04 as the Jets continued to carry the game to the Washington net. Notes: The Jets and Capitals are well acquainted. Going into Tuesdays game, the Jets had a record of 4-4-1 against Washington since the start of their inaugural 2011-12 season in Winnipeg in the Southeast Division. Abdul-Jabbar Authentic Jersey . Barrichello is thrilled to be racing in front of his Brazilian fans for the first time since joining IndyCar, but admits he still is adapting to the series and wont be racing among the leaders on Sunday. Kobe Bryant Jersey . There is considerable interest from fans around the league as well, with all eight teams vulnerable to poaching. Perhaps his best option at landing his first choice at QB, the expansion draft also poses problems for general manager Marcel Desjardins. Elgin Baylor Lakers Jersey . -- Quinn OBrien scored three times in the third period as the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies beat the host Chicoutimi Sagueneens 7-3 on Friday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Royals had scored just eight runs during a four-game losing streak, and were preparing to face former Cy Young winner Zack Greinke and the power-packed Los Angeles Dodgers. Perfect time to end that slump, eh? Jeremy Guthrie pitched into the eighth inning, Jarrod Dyson drove in two runs off Greinke and the Royals held on to beat the Dodgers 5-3 on Monday night in their first meeting in nine years. "Dont ask me why we had success tonight," Royals manager Ned Yost said drily. Dyson, the Royals No. 9 hitter, went 3 for 3 and stole two bases. Salvador Perez hit a solo home run, and Lorenzo Cain and Alcides Escobar -- two of the players acquired by the Royals in the trade that sent Greinke to Milwaukee in December 2010 -- drove in a run apiece. It was an offensive outburst considering the Royals had lost three of their last four games by 2-1 scores, squandering solid pitching performances by their starting rotation. "There was never any panic," said Guthrie, who gave up two runs and seven hits in 7 2-3 innings to win his third straight start. "We lost a couple of close games. We recognize a couple things go our way we would have won a couple of them." Greg Holland served up a homer to Adrian Gonzalez in the ninth before earning his 22nd save. Hanley Ramirez drove in the other two runs for the Dodgers, who are visiting Kansas City for the first time since they were swept in a three-game set in 2005. In his third start against his former team, Greinke (9-4) was battered for a season-high five runs and 11 hits in 5 2-3 innings. He had allowed two runs over 15 1-3 innings in his previous two starts against the Royals, one with the Brewers and the other with the Los Angeles Angels. "I thought he was OK," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "There were a few balls where you could see where he was trying to go one place and it didnt end up there. I know a couple of those were to Dyson. I think some of the balls were trying to get to a different part of the plate and didnt get there." The Royals pounded Greinke almost from the start, Perez belting the first pitcch of the second inning over the wall in left field for a 1-0 lead.dddddddddddd Then with two outs, Escobar singled and went to second on a wild pitch before heading home when Dyson dumped a single into left field. Dyson made it 3-0 in the fifth when he scored on Cains single to right. The Royals finally knocked Greinke from the game in the fifth, this time after Perez started the inning with a double. Greinke fought back to get two outs, but Escobar hit a triple into the right-field corner and Dyson tacked on another RBI single to make it 5-0. That hit ended Greinkes night. As he departed the mound, fans showered him with a chorus of boos, clearly recalling how the right-hander once demanded to be traded from their team. "I was pretty rude on the way out. They have every right to be mad at me," Greinke said. "Its been awhile. Its been four years, so its been awhile. Theyve moved on by now and so have I. At least team-wise. The fans might be different." Meanwhile, those same fans were waiting to give Guthrie a standing ovation. The right-hander faced the minimum number of hitters through four innings, needing just four pitches in the second and five in the fourth. Gonzalez and Matt Kemp finally hit consecutive singles to start the fifth, but Guthrie calmly wiggled out of that jam. It wasnt until Miguel Rojas and Justin Turner hit singles and Ramirez one-hopped a double over the outfield wall to make it 5-2 in the eighth that Guthrie finally left the game. Wade Davis finished the inning, and Holland cleaned up the ninth to preserve the win. "Its a funny game. You go against a guy like Zack Greinke whos had so much success this year," Yost said. "We strung some hits together along with some outstanding pitching weve had the last five or six starts, its a big win for us tonight." NOTES: LHP Clayton Kershaw was the NL player of the week after his no-hitter against Colorado. He starts for Los Angeles on Tuesday against Royals LHP Danny Duffy. ... Kemp extended his hitting streak to 11 games. ... Guthrie struck out five without a walk. ... The Dodgers had won seven straight interleague cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' ' |
