MELBOURNE  Rashaad Penny Youth Jersey , June 29 (Xinhua) -- Australia's top Catholic priest, Cardinal George Pell, has been charged with sex offences by Victoria Police on Thursday.

Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton confirmed that Pell would be required to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 18.

Pell, who is now based in Vatican, is the third most senior Catholic in the world and has been given the responsibility of managing the church's finances.

In July 2016 police opened the investigation into Pell's involvement in sexual abuse cases that were alleged to have occurred in parishes in Ballarat, 105 km west of Melbourne, in the 1970s.

"The charges were today served on Cardinal Pell's legal representatives in Melbourne," Patton told a press conference.

"Cardinal Pell is facing multiple charges in respect to historic sexual offences and there are multiple complainants relating to those charges."

Pell  Tedric Thompson Youth Jersey , who was born and raised in Ballarat before becoming a local priest, said on Thursday that he would return to Australia shortly to fight the charges.

"Cardinal Pell will return to Australia, as soon as possible, to clear his name following advice and approval by his doctors who will also advise on his travel arrangements," he said in a statement on Thursday.

"(Cardinal Pell) said he is looking forward to his day in court and will defend the charges vigorously."

Pell was elevated to archbishop of Melbourne in 1996, where he established the Catholic Church's Melbourne Response Unit for victims of sexual abuse, before he moved to Sydney in 2001.

He gave evidence to the 2016 Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sex Abuse via video link after ill health made a return to Australia at that time impossible.

The Royal Commission found that 7 percent of all priests working in Australia between 1950 and 2009 were accused of child sex abuse.
