ST. JOHNS, N.L. -- John Albert scored with 42 seconds left in regulation Saturday as the St. Johns IceCaps completed a weekend sweep of the Manchester Monarchs with a 3-2 win in the American Hockey League. Spencer Machacek and Jason Gregoire also scored for the IceCaps (21-8-5), who got 14 saves from David Aebischer. Rob Mignardi and Dwight King replied for the Monarchs (21-15-2), while Martin Jones made 33 stops in the loss. Jordan Nolan added two assists. Albert beat Jones with an unassisted effort blocker side to win it for St. Johns in the final minute. Tied 1-1 entering the third, Gregoire solved Jones at 5:24 after moving past a Manchester defender and firing a backhander to give St. Johns a 2-1 lead. But King fired a one-timer on a Monarchs power play to level the game with 2:31 remaining. That set the stage for Alberts late heroics. Mignardi gave Manchester a 1-0 lead at 15:45 of the first after Aebischer made three initial saves in front. Machacek levelled the game for the IceCaps at 1:26 of the second period when he took the puck across the blue-line and put a low shot on net. Jones mad the initial save, but Machacek capitalized on the rebound. The period would bring more bad news for the Monarchs as Mignardi left the game after a scary hit to the head. Ben Maxwell received a five-minute major and game misconduct for boarding after he crunched Mignardis head against the boards. Mignardi laid on the ice for several minutes before leaving the ice with the help of a trainer and two teammates. There was no update on his condition immediately following the game. But it was a deke by McClement that finally ended things. "A lot of light-heartenedness taking place on the bench," Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said. "A lot of guys betting on Jay, so we waited right till the end." Before the shootout, the game had the chippiness normally reserved for the regular season. It featured three fights, including Troy Bodie taking on Patrick Kaleta after the Sabres agitator went after captain Dion Phaneuf. From the Leafs perspective, Ott started the trouble before that dust-up. "I think Ott intentionally shot the puck at Dion," Carlyle said. "Thats what it appeared from where we were. Those are the kind of things that in exhibition are kind of questionable at this point." The Leafs and Sabres played on the edge all night. Carlyle said it the 15-round was something he had never seen before, but even for those with similar experiences this was something unique. "We had one in Rochester, I think we went through everybody except for maybe Joe Finley. I think we had a call-up score," Rolston said.
