ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Orlando Magic finally are showing the patience in critical moments that coach Jacque Vaughn has been waiting for all season. The Magic fought off repeated challenges from the Brooklyn Nets, many of them in the final two minutes, to claim a 115-111 victory over a playoff-bound team. It was the second win a row where Orlando executed better than its opponent in the final minutes of a close game. "Were continuing to learn at the end of games and not panic," Vaughn said. "I want these guys to enjoy what they do for a living. We come to work, we get better. Thats what we do." Arron Afflalo scored five of his 25 points in the final two minutes. Jameer Nelson was 4 of 4 from the free throw line in the final 13 seconds and Kyle OQuinn had a key assist and block as Orlando made every play it needed to stop the Nets. Reserve ETwaun Moore made all six shots, five of them 3-pointers, to tie his season high of 17 points. Tobias Harris added 16 points and eight rebounds. "We are better in close games and it shows the maturity and confidence were gaining as a group," Afflalo said. "The Nets are one of the hottest teams since the new year and we got good performances from a lot of our role players." The Magic needed a lot at both ends in the second half to stop a hot-shooting Brooklyn team that was making shots from everywhere. Joe Johnson led the Nets with 31 points, but had a potential game-tying 3-pointer blocked by Quinn with 10 seconds left in the game. Mirza Teletovic, who was 1 for 10 from the field in the first half, hit four 3-pointers in the third period to start the Nets on their way to 23 of 37 (62.2 per cent) shooting in the second half. Teletovic finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. Mason Plumlee had 16 points and Marcus Thornton 13 off the bench for Brooklyn, which played without injured starters Paul Pierce and Shaun Livingston. "At the end, we executed offensively, but defensively, we didnt," Nets coach Jason Kidd said. "We pretty much had five guards out there, playing Joe at the centre. We probably put him in a bad way, trying to make a 3 on a 7-footer (OQuinn). As coaches we can get better. This was a learning experience." The Magic led 107-101 after Afflalos 3-pointer with 1:58 left in the game, but Brooklyn cut it to 110-109 on a layup by Johnson with 14 seconds remaining. Nelson made two free throws for Orlando, then OQuinn cleanly blocked a 3-pointer by Johnson with 10 seconds left. Nelson and Afflalo combined for three free throws to put the game away from there. The Magic led by as many as 16 in the first half and carried an 83-78 lead into the fourth quarter, but had to withstand some sharpshooting by Brooklyn in the second half. The Nets hit 23 of 37 shots (62 per cent) in the final two quarters and got seven 3-pointers and four three-point plays, but it still wasnt enough to overcome Orlando. The Magic kept pace with a hot-shooting second half of their own, making nearly 57 per cent, and got key shots from Afflalo, Moore and Nelson every time Brooklyn got close. The Nets hit six 3-pointers, four by Teletovic, in the third quarter and Deron Williams and Kevin Garnett added three-point plays to help Brooklyn rally from a 55-43 halftime deficit. The Nets tied the game at 78 on a dunk by Plumlee with 35 seconds left, but Victor Oladipo countered with a perimeter jumper and Moore hit his fifth straight 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Magic an 83-78 lead going into the final period. The teams traded baskets for the first 15 minutes of the game before Moore knocked down four 3-pointers to ignite a 20-3 run that helped Orlando to a 55-43 halftime lead. The reserve guard hit three straight 3s from nearly the exact same spot on the left side of the basket, then crossed to a similar spot on the right side and drained another. In between, he added a fast-break layup for 11 straight points, before being taken out of the game. NOTES: Magic C Nikola Vucevic missed his third straight game with a sore Achilles tendon. What makes Perrys pest persona on the ice intriguing is that it differs sharply with the seemingly reclusive life he leads away from the rink. "Hes very, very quiet off the ice," said Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau. "Hes actually shy around people. But on the ice hes one competitive man." "If you dont really know him off the ice hes pretty quiet, he really doesnt say too much," said Kings defenceman Drew Doughty, who lives around the corner from Perry in London, Ont. and was his Olympic teammate in February. "You kind of got to get to know him a bit more. Hes an awesome guy off the ice and I see him quite a bit in the summer, but on the ice hes just a pest out there. Hes a really good player and he likes to get under the other teams skin and when you put those two things together it kind of frustrates you." Perry was third on the Ducks with 65 penalty minutes in the regular season. He is fourth on the team in penalty minutes during the post-season with 15. And the Kings are wary of being goaded into taking retaliation penalties. "If he starts [agitating] after the whistle then Im probably going to ignore it, but if its throughout the game, hes going to try and hit me or whatever, Im going to try and hit him for sure," said Doughty. "You got to play physical on a guy like that. The only way you can beat him is physically. You got to play him hard and try and get under his skin too, because he gets frustrated at times." What makes Perry somewhat different is that hes a creative pest. His prank on Jeff Carter in Game 1 – squirting water in his Olympic teammattes unattended glove during a commercial break – went viral.dddddddddddd Someone even showed Boudreau the video on YouTube. It reminded the Ducks bench boss of when Perry sprayed water at Colorado Avalanche head coach Patrick Roy at the end of the first game of the regular season when the two coaches engaged in a shouting match. Perry also made it on to plenty of highlight reels earlier in the season. During a November overtime game in Carolina, the 28-year-old broke his stick and grabbed one right out of Alex Semins hands while skating back to the Ducks bench. Semin was hanging over the boards waiting to come on as part of a line change. "I dont know if hes trying to get under peoples skin or if hes just playing like hes been playing since he was six years old," said Boudreau. "I dont think hes a guy like [Stars forwards] Antoine Roussel or [Ryan] Garbutt, who purposely do things to tick the other person off. I think Corey just plays as Corey and if it ticks people off then thats an added bonus." Boudreau believes Perry needs to create chaos in order to be the effective 43-goal scorer he is. "The more youre on him and the more you hound him the more competitive he gets just like when I watch Doughty," Boudreau explains. "The more you hit him the better he gets." "If Im not doing different things," Perry said, "Im not going to be myself on the ice." But how does Perry explain the double life he leads? How is he able to morph from unassuming off the ice into an annoyance on it? "Theres a switch where, when I get to the rink, it flips on," the former Hart Trophy winner said quietly. "I can turn it off when I leave." NOTES: Perry and Getzlaf held a one-on-one meeting after the Game 2 loss to discuss why they werent as effective. "Luckily enough we dont have to have them that often," said Getzlaf. "Its not that often where both of us dont have a good game. Sometimes its one or the other and we can kind of pick each other up a bit. There were just some things we needed to do better. Its not like we were playing horrible or anything like that. It was just we needed to be better than we were and thats when you have those talks." The two responded with a strong effort in Game 3 as the Ducks got back in the series. Perry scored the opening goal of the game on the power play ... "We just got to take him out of this series," said Doughty of Perry.
